With a distinguished background in emergency management and security, Joe Hutchinson brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role. Prior to joining the Salem Fire Department/City of Salem, Joe served as the Director of Emergency Management and Security for Samaritan Health Services, where he led numerous initiatives and forged critical partnerships with key organizations.
One of Joe’s notable achievements during his tenure at Samaritan Health Services was his leadership in navigating the unprecedented challenges posed by the wildfires of 2020. His strategic approach ensured the safety and well-being of both staff and patients, including the successful evacuation of a hospital in the face of imminent danger.
In addition to his role at Samaritan Health Services, Joe Hutchinson also served as a board member for the American Red Cross (S.W. Oregon Chapter), representing his organization with distinction. His involvement in various committees and task forces, including the Workplace Violence Steering Committee and the Covid Virus Task Force, underscores his commitment to addressing multifaceted challenges in emergency preparedness and response.
Joe’s career spans over 30 years, during which he has held diverse roles ranging from tactical team member to Operations Chief. His expertise extends beyond operational matters, as he has also provided training and support to fellow public safety officers and emergency management personnel in a wide array of areas, including procedural law, defensive tactics, and incident command system courses.
