Salem Fire Foundation Awarded Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation Grant for 18k
Salem, Oregon (November 7, 2016)– Just in time for its second birthday, Salem Fire Foundation (SFF) was awarded a grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation. The grant, valued at $18,705.85, will provide 15 Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) for the Salem community. In trained hands, these devices will help to improve community survival rates of sudden cardiac arrest, which is responsible for 383,000 deaths a year.
In its first year after founding, SFF placed 64 AEDs in first responder vehicles so that every police car in Salem is equipped with these lifesaving devices. Now, the foundation’s goal has shifted to supplying the people with the tools to save others in the community. This entails not only making AEDs readily available to the public, but also teaching Salem eighth graders high quality, hands-only CPR so they may go home and teach their friends and family. To date, SFF has trained over 2,400 students. It is possible that in ten years Salem will be a city fully trained in CPR and have the highest cardiac arrest survival rate in the nation.
Thanks to its generous donors like Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, SFF has already placed over 30 AEDs in highly trafficked areas of the city, ready for when a crisis occurs.
According to Salem Fire Chief Mike Niblock, “Immediate recognition of the emergency, coupled with quick 911 notification, early CPR and early defibrillation are foundational in the survival of a cardiac arrest.”
To get involved and support Salem Fire Foundation’s efforts, download the PulsePoint smartphone app and register the AEDs you find around our city, donate online, or consider becoming a sustainer member at www.salemfire.mystagingwebsite.com. If your business, nonprofit, or personal household would like an AED you may apply for a grant or to purchase one on their website.
Firehouse Subs opened in Salem in May this year and is located at 3810 Commercial St. SE, Salem, OR 97302.
